United Airlines Just Added 10 New International Destinations for 2027: Here's Where I'm Ready to Send You
United Airlines just gave me ten new reasons to start planning international vacations for 2027.
And listen, as a travel advisor who flies United enough to have Global Services status, I pay attention when United makes an announcement like this.
But this one? This one is BIG.
United has announced its largest international expansion ever, adding 10 brand-new international destinations for 2027, along with additional new routes to destinations already in its network.
And because apparently ten new destinations weren't enough excitement for one morning, United also introduced its newest international aircraft, the Airbus A321XLR "Born to Explore."
So yes, the Travel Queen is paying attention. 👑✈️
Because we're not just getting new dots on an airline route map. We're getting easier access to some absolutely incredible places in Japan and Europe, including several destinations that have historically required more complicated connections from the United States.
And that means I can start creating some REALLY good vacations.
United's 10 New International Destinations for 2027
Starting in March 2027, United will begin service to:
Okinawa, Japan
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Toulouse, France
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Olbia, Sardinia, Italy
Catania, Sicily, Italy
Ibiza, Spain
Valencia, Spain
Marseille, France
Terceira, Azores, Portugal
Eight of these destinations will have nonstop U.S. service that no other U.S. airline currently offers.
But let's forget about airline schedules for a minute.
Where should you actually go?
Because that's where this gets fun.
Okinawa, Japan
New route: San Francisco to Okinawa
Begins: March 27, 2027
Frequency: 3 times weekly
Aircraft: Boeing 777-200ER
If your idea of Japan is only Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, Okinawa is about to completely rearrange that picture.
Okinawa is tropical Japan.
Think beautiful beaches, clear water, snorkeling, diving, island hopping and an entirely different culture and pace than you'll experience in mainland Japan.
What can you do in Okinawa?
You could:
Visit Shurijo Castle and learn about the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom
Snorkel or dive in some incredible clear water
Visit the famous Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
Explore the Kerama Islands
Spend several days at a beachfront resort
Visit important World War II historical sites
Experience Okinawan cuisine and culture
And I especially love the idea of combining Tokyo + Okinawa.
Give me the energy, food and neon of Tokyo followed by several days relaxing on a Japanese island.
Now THAT is a Japan vacation.
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
New route: Newark to Luxembourg
Begins: April 2, 2027
Frequency: Daily
Aircraft: Airbus A321XLR
Luxembourg may be tiny, but don't mistake small for boring.
This is castles, cobblestone streets, wine country, beautiful countryside and one of those European destinations that makes an amazing jumping-off point for a bigger itinerary.
What can you do in Luxembourg?
Explore:
Luxembourg City's historic Old Quarter
Vianden Castle
The Moselle wine region
Medieval villages
Hiking trails and countryside
Nearby Belgium, France and Germany
This is where I would probably resist making Luxembourg your entire vacation.
Instead?
Luxembourg + Belgium + France
or
Luxembourg + Germany + the Alsace region of France
Now we're talking.
Toulouse, France
New route: Washington Dulles to Toulouse
Begins: April 26, 2027
Frequency: Daily
Aircraft: Airbus A321XLR
Hello, Southern France.
Toulouse is known as La Ville Rose, the Pink City, because of the rosy-colored brick architecture throughout the city.
But Toulouse also opens the door to a completely different France vacation.
What can you do around Toulouse?
Think:
Food markets and French cafés
Wine experiences
Canal du Midi
Medieval Carcassonne
Day trips through the Occitanie region
Beautiful villages
Southern French countryside
If you've already done Paris and you're ready to experience another side of France, this one deserves a look.
Ljubljana, Slovenia
New route: Newark to Ljubljana
Begins: May 12, 2027
Frequency: 4 times weekly
Aircraft: Boeing 767-400ER
I have been waiting for more travelers to discover Slovenia.
Ljubljana is charming, walkable and beautiful on its own, but the real magic is everything you can reach from it.
What can you do in Slovenia?
Start with:
Ljubljana's Old Town
Ljubljana Castle
Lake Bled
The Julian Alps
Postojna Cave
Predjama Castle
Slovenia's wine regions
Beautiful alpine villages
And Slovenia works beautifully in a multi-country itinerary.
Slovenia + Croatia could be fantastic.
So could Slovenia + northern Italy.
This is exactly the kind of destination where having a travel advisor build the entire route matters, because the best vacation isn't necessarily seven nights in one hotel.
Olbia, Sardinia, Italy
New route: Newark to Olbia
Begins: May 27, 2027
Frequency: 3 times weekly
Aircraft: Boeing 767-300ER
United, you had me at Sardinia.
If your vision of Italy is Rome, Florence and Venice, allow me to introduce you to a completely different Italian vacation.
Sardinia is an island in the Mediterranean known for spectacular beaches, turquoise water, dramatic coastline and gorgeous resorts.
What can you do in Sardinia?
This is where we can build a vacation around:
Costa Smeralda
Porto Cervo
La Maddalena Archipelago
Boat days
Hidden beaches and coves
Italian food and wine
Luxury resorts
Small coastal towns
This could be a phenomenal honeymoon or anniversary trip.
And if you want Italy without doing another traditional Italy itinerary, Sardinia immediately jumps onto my list.
Catania, Sicily, Italy
New route: Newark to Catania
Begins: May 28, 2027
Frequency: 4 times weekly
Aircraft: Boeing 767-300ER
This may be one of my favorite announcements on the entire list.
Because flying into Catania gives us incredible access to eastern Sicily.
And eastern Sicily has a LOT to work with.
What can you do from Catania?
How about:
Taormina
Mount Etna
Sicilian wineries
Syracuse and Ortigia
Baroque towns
Beaches
Cooking classes
Food tours
Ancient Greek and Roman sites
You could spend a week exploring Sicily, or we could incorporate Sicily into a longer Italian vacation.
And let's be clear: if your main goal is to eat your way through Sicily, I fully support this travel strategy.
No notes. 🍝
Ibiza, Spain
New route: Newark to Ibiza
Begins: May 31, 2027
Frequency: 4 times weekly
Aircraft: Airbus A321XLR
Before somebody tells me, "But I don't want to go clubbing..."
Good.
Because there is so much more to Ibiza.
Yes, Ibiza is famous for nightlife. But it's also a gorgeous Mediterranean island with beaches, coves, beautiful hotels, incredible restaurants, historic areas and easy access to neighboring Formentera.
What can you do in Ibiza besides party?
Plenty.
Explore Dalt Vila, Ibiza's historic fortified old town
Spend the day on secluded beaches
Take a boat to Formentera
Charter a boat for the day
Stay at a luxury resort
Explore local markets
Enjoy incredible dining
Book wellness and spa experiences
Watch some ridiculous Mediterranean sunsets
Couples trip?
Girls trip?
Anniversary?
Spain itinerary ending with several days on an island?
Absolutely.
Valencia, Spain
New route: Newark to Valencia
Begins: June 2, 2027
Frequency: 3 times weekly
Aircraft: Airbus A321XLR
Barcelona and Madrid get most of the attention from first-time visitors to Spain.
But Valencia deserves its own moment.
You get history, culture, fantastic food AND the Mediterranean coast.
What can you do in Valencia?
Start with:
Valencia's historic center
City of Arts and Sciences
Central Market
Turia Gardens
Mediterranean beaches
Tapas and food tours
Albufera Natural Park
And then there is paella.
Valencia is the birthplace of paella.
Which means clearly we need to conduct extensive research.
For professional reasons, obviously.
Valencia could be a great standalone city-and-beach getaway, but I also love pairing it with Madrid for travelers who want two very different Spanish experiences.
Marseille, France
New route: Newark to Marseille
Begins: June 4, 2027
Frequency: Daily
Aircraft: Airbus A321XLR
This one immediately caught my attention for TWO reasons.
Provence. And river cruises.
Marseille isn't just somewhere I would send you for a city stay. It can become the beginning or end of an incredible Southern France vacation.
And for my river cruise travelers, this new nonstop could be a VERY interesting option.
Marseille + a Rhône River Cruise
Many Southern France river cruises sail the Rhône and Saône Rivers, with itineraries beginning or ending around Arles, Avignon or Lyon.
That opens up some fantastic possibilities:
Fly nonstop into Marseille
Spend a few nights exploring Provence
Visit Aix-en-Provence or Cassis
Continue to Arles or Avignon
Board your river cruise
Sail through the vineyards, villages and historic cities of Southern France
Or do it in reverse and finish your river cruise with a few days along the Mediterranean.
River cruise + Provence + French Riviera?
Yes, please.
What can you do from Marseille?
We can build your trip around:
Marseille's Old Port
Calanques National Park
Cassis
Aix-en-Provence
Avignon
Arles
Provence villages
Vineyards and wine experiences
Lavender country during the right season
French food and markets
The Mediterranean coastline
And this is exactly why I get excited when airlines add routes like this.
The flight doesn't just give us another city to visit.
It gives us a better way to build the entire vacation.
For a river cruise traveler, Marseille could become the perfect place to begin or end a Rhône River cruise instead of simply flying in and out of Paris.
Terceira, Azores, Portugal
New route: Newark to Terceira
Begins: June 9, 2027
Frequency: 3 times weekly
Aircraft: Boeing 737 MAX 8
If the Azores aren't on your radar yet, they should be.
The Azores are Portuguese islands sitting out in the Atlantic, and they look like someone turned the saturation up on Mother Nature.
Green landscapes. Volcanic scenery. Natural swimming areas. Dramatic coastlines.
And Terceira gives adventure travelers something completely different from a traditional European vacation.
What can you do on Terceira?
Try:
Exploring Angra do Heroísmo
Walking through volcanic landscapes
Visiting Algar do Carvão
Swimming in natural volcanic pools
Hiking
Whale and dolphin watching
Driving the island
Experiencing Azorean food and culture
And we could combine Terceira with another Azores island or continue your trip into mainland Portugal.
If you love Iceland, Madeira, Costa Rica or trips centered around nature and adventure, I would put the Azores on your radar.
Now Can We Talk About United's New A321XLR?
Because I am a travel advisor.
But I am also United Global Services.
So naturally, I have questions about the SEATS. 😂
United's new Airbus A321XLR "Born to Explore" will operate five of these new international routes:
Luxembourg
Toulouse
Ibiza
Valencia
Marseille
And this isn't just United taking a regular domestic narrow-body aircraft and sending it across the Atlantic.
The A321XLR has been designed for long-haul international flying, and United is putting some very interesting features onboard.
United Polaris on the A321XLR
The aircraft will have 20 United Polaris suites with:
Lie-flat seats
Privacy doors
4K OLED entertainment screens
Bluetooth connectivity
Yes.
Privacy doors.
You KNOW I noticed that part.
United Premium Plus
There will also be 12 United Premium Plus seats, giving the aircraft a total of 32 premium seats.
That is 16 more premium seats than United's Boeing 757-200.
A New Economy Plus Concept
This part is actually really interesting.
United is introducing Economy Plus seats that provide additional elbow room by leaving the middle seat open and turning that space into a shared table.
So instead of fighting over an armrest with a stranger somewhere over the Atlantic, you get additional space between you.
I am intrigued.
Starlink Wi-Fi + Better Entertainment
United says the aircraft will also feature:
Free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members
4K OLED seatback screens
Bluetooth connectivity
A snack bar in United Economy
I'm going to need to inspect all of this personally.
Again, for research purposes.
United Is Also Adding More International Routes in 2027
The ten new destinations aren't the only additions.
United is also adding:
Los Angeles to Osaka, Japan
Daily beginning March 27, 2027.
Denver to Paris, France
Daily beginning May 27, 2027.
Washington Dulles to Milan, Italy
Three times weekly beginning May 28, 2027.
United also plans to restart service between San Francisco and Tel Aviv beginning March 28, 2027.
And several destinations introduced for summer 2026 are scheduled to return in 2027, including Split, Croatia; Bari, Italy; Glasgow, Scotland; and Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Translation?
My international itinerary-building board just got considerably bigger.
Which New United Destination Should You Choose?
That's where Northcutt Travel Agency comes in.
A new nonstop flight does not mean you need to book seven nights in the city where the airplane lands.
Sometimes that destination should be your entire vacation.
Sometimes it's the doorway to the vacation.
Catania can become Sicily.
Marseille can become Provence.
Olbia can become a Sardinian beach vacation.
Ljubljana can become Slovenia and Croatia.
Toulouse can become a Southern France road trip.
Terceira can become an Azores adventure.
And Luxembourg could become a multi-country European itinerary.
That is the difference between booking a flight and actually planning a trip.
